Volunteer Code of Conduct
Last updated 1 October 2026 · Version 1.0
Every TCHF volunteer agrees to these rules before each shift. They say in plain words what the Volunteer Agreement already asks of you, for every program all year. If the two ever differ, the agreement you signed applies.
In short
- Be kind, respectful and reliable.
- Work outside only. Never go inside a home, even if you are invited in.
- No money, gifts or favours. A thank-you is enough.
- Keep names, addresses and anything you see private.
- Stay safe. You can always stop, and you will never be blamed for stopping for safety.
- In an emergency, call 911 first, then tell your coordinator.
Be kind and respectful
Treat every resident, family member, fellow volunteer and staff member with respect, patience and kindness. TCHF welcomes everyone, as the Ontario Human Rights Code requires. Harassment, bullying, discrimination and unwanted contact are never allowed, in person or online.
Be reliable
If you take a home, do it, or tap I can’t complete this as early as you can so someone else can help. Homes left unfinished go back on the list for others.
Work outside only
Never go inside a resident’s home, even if you are invited in, and never be alone inside a home with anyone.
No money, gifts or favours
Don’t accept money, gifts, tips, loans or favours. A kind “thank you” is enough. Don’t lend money, sign anything for a resident, or handle their keys, mail, bank cards or medication. Don’t sell or promote anything, ask for donations, or arrange paid work with someone you met through TCHF.
Keep it private
Names, addresses, phone numbers and anything you see at a home are private. Use them only for your TCHF job. Don’t share them, keep them or post them. Photos you take in the app stay in the app.
Be fit and safe
Never volunteer while impaired by alcohol, cannabis or any drug. No weapons, and no smoking or vaping on a resident’s property.
- Dress for the weather, take breaks and drink water.
- Don’t climb roofs or ladders, and stay clear of traffic.
- Use equipment only as the equipment rule below allows.
- You can always stop. If a job looks unsafe, tap I can’t complete this, leave, and tell your coordinator. You will never be blamed for stopping for safety.
Equipment
- Snow: hand tools only (a shovel, and salt or sand the household provides).
- Lawn Care: the household’s lawnmower and trimmer, for adults only.
- Volunteers under 18 never use powered equipment.
Protect seniors and young people
- If someone is hurt or in danger, call 911 first, then tell your coordinator.
- If you’re worried a senior is being harmed or taken advantage of, tell your coordinator the same day (Ontario Seniors Safety Line: 1-866-299-1011).
- Adults: don’t be alone out of sight with a volunteer under 18, and don’t message them privately outside TCHF channels.
- If you believe a child may need protection, the law requires you to report it to a children’s aid society.
Report problems
Tell your coordinator the same day about any injury, property damage or near miss. Don’t admit fault or promise to pay for damage; TCHF will follow up.
If the code isn’t followed
TCHF may pause or end your volunteering. Questions: info@tchf.ca.
